“It’s All About The Apex” - The Key to Successful POP Surgery 


Marie Paraiso, MD

Dr. Paraiso is Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Health Sciences at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and Section Head of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.  She has a dual appointment to the OBGYN and Women’s Health Institute and the Glickman Urology and Kidney Institute.  She earned her Medical Doctorate from Indiana University School of Medicine (Indianapolis, USA). She completed OBGYN residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati and fellowships in Advanced Pelvic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Gynecology at the Cleveland Clinic. She is Board Certified in OBGYN and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. 

Nationally, Dr. Paraiso has served twice on the Board of Directors for the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) 2000-2003, 2007-2010 and as the Scientific Program Vice Chair and Chair for 2011 and 2012 AUGS Annual Meetings, respectively. She has served on the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) Board of Trustees from 2012-2014.  Dr. Paraiso recently was the Scientific Program Chair of the Global Congress in Las Vegas and is currently President of the AAGL, the premier organization in the world of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. She is committed to work and collaborate with other national and international organizations.  She was elected to and serves on the 2017-2020 International Urogynecologic Association Scientific Program Committee.

Dr. Paraiso has pioneered innovative surgeries in traditional and robotic-assisted laparoscopy.  She has enjoyed educating colleagues, urogynecology, female urology, and women’s health fellows, residents, and medical students throughout her career. She has lectured extensively throughout the world, reviews for 13 major journals, and has authored a vast amount of published work, including 147 peer reviewed publications, 23 book chapters, and one book. She is currently co-editor of a textbook entitled Laparoscopic Urogynecology.  She is a proud of her work as primary investigator for the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network (NIH funded research collaboration), primary investigator of numerous prospective randomized trials, and, as previous Vice Chairperson of the ACOG Practical Bulletins Committee for Gynecology.  She has received many awards, including the APGO CREOG and CREOG teaching awards, the AAGL Kurt Semm and Golden Laparoscope Award, the AUGS Best Clinical Manuscript Award, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons (SGS) Best Fellow and Best Member Clinical Research Papers and Prize Videos, and the prestigious Raymond Lee Lectureship in 2017.  She has been voted Best Doctor in Cleveland Magazine and Best Doctors in America annually from 2006-2019 by her peers.

Dr. Paraiso enjoys spending precious time with her husband, 2 children, and extended family, traveling, playing various sports, and attending cultural events.  She is active at her church as lector and Eucharistic minister and volunteers for numerous charitable foundations in her community.
