President's Letter

Dear Colleagues,

Happy New Year!

First and foremost, I want to acknowledge Drs. Lauren Siff, Cara King, Stacey Scheib, Lisa Peacock, the LSU simulation lab team, Missy Render and the rest of the organizing Status Plus team who put together a successful Winter Postgraduate Course! We also thank our industry sponsors who contributed to make the event happen. The 4-day gathering in New Orleans materialized all that SGS stands for – surgical education, mentorship, collaboration – enacted in an intimate and interactive environment. It was hands down one of the best Winter PG Courses I have participated in! We also congratulate Dr. Anita Register, our Michael P. Aronson Scholarship recipient, and all the attendees who are the reason the teaching faculty return year after year!

As we march into 2024, I am filled with excitement and optimism for what lies ahead for SGS. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones and set new benchmarks for excellence. And the best is yet to come!

We are counting down to our 50th Annual Scientific Program Meeting in Orlando. Our theme for our anniversary meeting, The Changing Landscape in Gynecologic Surgery, features keynote speakers – Drs. Maureen Phipps and Carrie Cunningham – and panels of experts who will address the challenges we face as surgeons in the current changing landscape in women’s health and rapid innovation in science while balancing our personal well-being. The scientific program of oral and video presentations also promises to impress. I invite you to register soon as we anticipate another record-breaking number of attendees this year.

SGS combines education with fun and relaxation! The quality of the social program to celebrate this milestone meeting will not lag behind the scientific program. Do take advantage of the networking and social activities planned for Tuesday afternoon. The 50th Anniversary “Around the World” celebration is scheduled for Tuesday night to raise funds for SHARE (Surgeons Helping Advance Research and Education). Join us for food, fun, camaraderie, and special anniversary surprises!

Lastly, I am thankful to be a part of our SGS community. Together, we continue to elevate the standards of surgical care for our patients and inspire the next generation of surgical educators. The New Year holds immense promise, and I am confident that, together, we will write another remarkable chapter for the next 50 years of our Society.

Here’s to a year filled with innovation, resilience, collaboration, and unparalleled success.

Sincerely,
Rosanne

2024 President's Award Recipient

Ted T. Lee, MD

Dr. Lee is the NYU Langone Health Director of the Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery and Chief of Surgical Innovation for Gynecology in the NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. For two decades, he served as faculty and later as Professor and Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at Magee-Womens Hospital. He is recognized nationally and internationally for his expertise in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and his research contributions have significantly impacted the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis. Dr. Lee has been a member of SGS since 2009. His valuable contributions to the Society include presentation of abstracts and surgical videos at our Annual Scientific Meeting, and participation as a speaker and teaching faculty at our annual Winter Postgraduate Course. Moreover, he has brought many of his residents and fellows into the SGS fold through his mentorship through the years.

Please join us in raising funds for SGS in Dr. Lee’s honor! Dr. Lee has requested donations in his honor to benefit the John O. L. DeLancey Fund which supports the Pelvic Anatomy Group and development of the new digital anatomy library and the Michael P. Aronson Fund which provides scholarships for early career faculty to attend the SGS Winter Postgraduate Course in Advanced Gynecologic Surgery

NEW! Simulation Advisory Service for SGS Members

The SGS Education Committee is excited to announce a new advisory service for SGS members interested in education via simulation. This service is provided by a core group of faculty who specialize in education via simulation, have experience on many topics related to simulation, and who have collaborated on multiple projects (such as conducting simulations, teaching post-graduate courses, publications, and research).

The advisors are available to SGS members to answer questions and assist with simulation development and implementation with the goal of programmatic sharing and development. Some examples of what advisors can assist with:

  • helping design and implement simulations
  • developing simulation curricula and programs
  • professional development
  • how to get started, get buy-in, build programs, and publish
  • how to interface leadership and quality committees

SGS members who wish to take advantage of this new service can email Dr. Veronica Lerner ([email protected]) with a brief description of their request. After a brief intake, the advisors will suggest faculty to consider working with. Faculty and members will decide what type of interaction (email, Zoom calls, phone calls, etc.) works best for them.

This service is free of charge and available to SGS members.

Get Involved: New SGS Communications Committee is Forming

Kick off the new year with a higher level of society involvement! SGS is seeking volunteers to serve on a NEW Communications Committee. If you have a passion and skill for clear communication and using the latest technological tools for outreach and advancing the profession, we are looking for you! Submit your interest in serving on this new committee by January 24.

The Communications Committee will oversee the communication channels we use to communicate with and engage both SGS members and potential members, and ensure information distributed via SGS communication channels is current and up to date.

The committee will be made up of three subcommittees, each led by an Associate Chair. The Social Media Subcommittee will develop strategy and content for distribution via social media channels, the Website Subcommittee will conduct periodic reviews of the SGS website and recommend updates and new content, and the Podcast Subcommittee will develop a production plan and content for the SGS Unscrubbed podcast. Help SGS communications stand out and meet the needs of our members!

The committee will be chaired by an Active SGS member appointed by the Board. The chair will be responsible for the committee as a whole, inclusive of all subcommittees. One of the first tasks of the chair will be to establish a Task Force to conduct a review/needs assessment of the SGS website in collaboration with the Website Subcommittee. Each subcommittee will be led by an associate chair. The associate chair may be an Active Member, Associate Member, or Associate – Post Training Member.

All members of SGS (Active, Associate, and Associate – Post Training) are eligible to serve on the Communications Committee, provided there is an equal or majority number of Active SGS members in each subcommittee.
