In Memoriam: Dr. James L. Breen

The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons mourns the passing of James L. Breen, MD, an exceptional surgeon, educator, and leader whose influence on women’s health spanned decades. Dr. Breen served as President of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons (1988–1989) and President of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (1983–1984). Throughout his distinguished career, he was recognized for building outstanding academic programs, mentoring generations of physicians, and advancing excellence in gynecologic surgery and women’s health.

One of Dr. Breen’s enduring contributions to SGS was founding the Annual Postgraduate Course in Advanced Gynecologic Surgery in 1989. For many years, this premier educational course, held in New York City, brought together leading surgeons and trainees from across the country and helped establish a tradition of innovation and lifelong learning that continues to define SGS educational programs.

The Society extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Breen’s family, friends, colleagues, and former trainees. His vision, leadership, and commitment to surgical education will remain an enduring part of the SGS legacy.
