VAGINAL HYSTERECTOMY IN NULLIPAROUS WOMEN
Stephen L. Larson, M.D.
Purpose: To evaluate frequency and outcome of vaginal hysterectomy
performed in nulliparous patients in a private practice.
Methods: Review of a gynecologist’s experience of 1651 hysterectomies,
with analysis of nulliparas who had vaginal hysterectomy.
Results: Of 1297 vaginal hysterectomy patients, 118 (9.1%) had no term
pregnancies. 74 uteri were morcellated, and 69 oophorectomies accomplished.
Laparoscopic assistance was required in 10 cases. Complications occurred in 6
patients, mainly benign cystotomies.
Conclusion: Vaginal hysterectomy (including oophorectomy) is feasible in
nulliparous patients. It may be assisted by uterine morcellation and/or
laparoscopy.
